We feel these when running onto the field, waiting on the starting grid, climbing into the chute.  It's your own body releasing adrenaline.  Let it do it's thing and your own body is limiting your perfomance.  Don't fight it but learn use it to your advantage.

Everyone makes mistakes, but how quickly and completely do you recover?  Or does that one mistake stay with you for the whole event?

Thoughts in the back of your head

Athletes have more parts to their life than competition alone. Family, friends, relationships, finances, career, study.  All these can take take your focus away from that moment during competition.  Learn how to deal with those issues and thoughts properly and keep your head in the game.

Performance Mindset Coaching

You can have the skills of a F1 driver or Professional Bull Rider, but you will not deliver your very best unless your mind is in the right place and you are fully connected with your environment.  Some elite level racing drivers even go so far as to say that their performance is more to do with their mental state and approach than their driving skills.


At Cognitive Performance Coaching we will partner with you and help you: 

  • Find your strengths and how to maximise them;
  • Set goals in life and sporting competition and achieve them;
  • Find and use mental strength or toughness;
  • Build resilience and persistence;
  • Deal with anxiety and pressure before and during competition;
  • Activate and better use your senses during competition;
  • Improve your reaction time;
  • Understand how to use self-talk effectively;
  • Enter and remain in a flow state for the duration of an event;
  • Use positive thinking appropriately, and when to leave it alone;
  • Prepare your mind for competition day; 
  • Overcome and quickly recover from unexpected issues and setbacks during competition;
  • De-brief and reflect after competition; 
  • Recover strongly from performance slumps or defeats;
  • Come back from significant crashes or injuries; and
  • When the time is right, prepare for and continue a great life and new career after retiring from professional sport. 


But don’t be surprised when we delve into all matters of your personal life and you as a person; such as your relationships, career, how you balance life with elite-level sport and your personal place in humanity.  Just imagine sitting at the start line waiting for the green light but in the back your mind are thoughts like:

  • Concerns about finding time to complete a History assignment before Monday;
  • Guilt because you spend more time preparing and racing your car than with your children or husband;
  • Financial anxiety because you have funded your competitive career on a credit card and are not sure how to pay it off;
  • Fear of your boss finding out you were at practice all day Friday and not sick as you told him.


Clearly these types of unresolved issues can have a very negative impact on your performance.

We will almost certainly use techniques of mindfulness and meditation to help you become more connected with your mind, body and the competition itself.  No singing bowls or whale music, but yes, this stuff works!
